I went to Bed, Bath, and Beyond today and was thrilled to find a pretty short line at the checkout, considering all the Christmas shoppers. There were only two women in front of me, each with two items. The first woman took a little longer than usual (writing a check). The woman directly in front of me had a bottle of perfume and a small garbage can. Her total was $16.
Customer: Oh wait, I have a coupon for the perfume!
Cashier: Oh, sorry. This is a coupon from Bath and Body Works. We don't accept competitor's coupons.
Customer: What's the difference? That coupon is for this same perfume that I'm buying.
Cashier: Right. But we don't accept competitor's coupons, so if you wanted to use this coupon, you'd have to buy this perfume at Bath and Body Works.
Customer: Well don't you have any coupons I could use?
Cashier: No. I don't have any coupons.
Customer: Well I know I have one at home. So can't you just give me the discount?
Cashier: If you bring back your coupon and this receipt we will refund you the amount of the discount.
Customer: Well I wish I could just use this coupon I have here.
Cashier: I'm sorry. We don't accept competitor's coupons.
Customer: Well what about Linens 'N Things coupons?
Cashier: They don't exist anymore.
Customer: What do you mean?
Cashier: They went out of business a couple years ago.
Customer: Are you sure about that?
Cashier: Yep.
Customer: Well then how is it that I have a coupon from them in my phone? *scrolling*
Cashier: Well, even if you did have a coupon from them, we don't accept competitor's coupons.
Customer: *scrolling* I know I have it in my phone somewhere. I just can't find it!
Cashier: Well we don't accept competitor's coupons anyway, even if you could find it.
Customer: Well I know I have a coupon from Linens 'N Things in my phone somewhere. And I know I have one of your coupons at home. So can't I just get the discount?
Cashier: If you bring your Bed, Bath, and Beyond coupon from home back here with your receipt we can refund the amount of the discount.
Customer: Well what about that perfume coupon that I have here.......
